Hello

Hey you, welcome to One.

One is a platform for raising awareness about the environmental impact of the foods we eat with a specific focus on the agriculture industry. It offers lifestyle tips you can easily adopt to reduce your daily CO2 footprint and budget conscience recipe ideas. We operate on the premise that everyone has the ability to make an impact, whether you decide to do meat free Mondays, or go vegan, every action counts in the effort to reduce your CO2 footprint.

My name is Tessa and I was inspired to raise awareness and hopefully motivate people around this issue as a result of my personal investment in the environmental and ethical benefits of a vegan diet. I became a vegan a little over a year ago after being inspired by people I met and conducting my own research. At first I was horrified by the physical mistreatment and harsh living conditions of animals in factory farming, yet this horror wasn’t quite enough to convert me. As a result of social conditioning, humans understand animals in certain ways, dogs are bred for companionship and a cow is bred for consumption or production. Which makes sense right? At least it still makes sense to me… So I don’t judge anyone for eating meat, as I understand it. However, after watching Cowspiracy (insert sarcastic eye-roll here) and following it up with my own research, I realised how detrimental the agriculture industry can be to the environment. Humans current consumption of meat is unsustainable. Australians eat on average 2.18kg of meat per person, per week according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which is significantly higher than the global average. The animal agriculture industry produces 65% of the world nitrous oxide, a gas with the global warming potential 296x more threatening than carbon dioxide. The solution is literally in everyones hands. If the the average consumer made the effort to reduce their weekly meat intake it would greatly reduce the agriculture industries self proclaimed strain to produce enough meat that’s currently demanded. From this, the industries environmental impact would be greatly reduced.

Expecting everyone to go vegan is also an unrealistic and unsustainable goal. It’s just like a fad diet in which you drink only juice for five days then binge for two weeks. Small steps can often be better in the long term. If you think you’re capable of becoming vegan or vegetarian thats amazing! But if you can reduce your weekly meat intake and make more conscious shopping choices when purchasing your meat that is amazing as well! Everyone has the power to make a positive impact on the environment by reducing their daily CO2 footprint.

Watch this space for new ideas, tricks and everyday tips on how you can reduce your daily CO2 footprint through your eating choices.
